Los Barriles Baja Chapter

The Kbgirls Baja Chapter event on March 31st was a special one.  Our community in Los Barriles honors two local people who contribute their time and efforts to making our little piece of earth better. So in the spirit of being a proud member of KB4girls and "raising awareness about environmental impact on oceans and beaches and contributing to the cause" we dressed up and headed out to celebrate the winner, Noe Araiza Fiol.

Noe was chosen as the recipient of the Amistad Award for his work in saving, protecting, releasing and increasing awareness about this area's sea turtles.  He has saved thousand of baby turtles by protecting their nests and ensuring a safe release  into the ocean.

It was a fun night out with the ladies.  The KB4girls table was definitely the most popular table, with people already wanting to sign up for a seat with the KB4girls next year!

March 9th, Twenty-two ladies got together at the Diva Shack at North Beach in Los Barriles for a 5 mile down winder to Spa Buena Vista.  The winds were great, blowing about 18-22knts, so we all rigged 7-9 meter kites.  As we began to head down wind, the clouds rolled in and the wind started to come down.  Some gals got off the water and re-rigged, opting for bigger kites. Most of us stuck it out and practiced our light wind kite efficiency!

The scenery was beautiful, following the white sand coastline through Los Barriles to Rancho Buena Vista and ending at Spa Buena Vista. We saw sea turtles, rays and even a shark (although I am sure it was small, cute and cuddly).  The swell was 3-4 ft at Spa and there were some ladies charging the line up.  The beach at SBV is one of the best places I know to learn to wave ride.

We Made It!

As we were packing away out gear the unanimous vote was to do it again as soon as possible! The few times a board was lost or a kite went down, our volunteer "sweepers" were there to help.  So a big MIL GRACIAS to Steve Kinney, Dylan Murphy and Jim Gray.  And thank you to all the guys that made the trip down to help land and transport.

It was an amazing experience with a group of incredible ladies.  Well done everyone!

Join KB4girls Baja for a down winder past Los Barriles to Hotel Buena Vista Spa!  We will have jet ski assistance so this is a perfect opportunity to lose your leash or practice jumping and freestyle!  Megan and Lisa will be riding and demonstrating whatever tricks you are working on.  This will be a blast!

Yay!  Baja Chapter just completed its first KB4Girls event and it was incredible!   37 women participated, some never having flown a kite, others looking forward to trying their first front rolls. Even though we had some cloudy weather, the wind was on, most ladies rigged 9/10m's.

We separated the women into groups based on experience. Lisa Tedford and Kirsten Ulmer went with the advanced ladies, teaching jumps, transitions and rolls. Emily Balla, Kelly Watermeyer, Natalia Murietta assisted the first time flyers, introducing kite control and safety.  I  helped the intermediate group with landing, launching and walking with the kite in the air.  Our goal for the day was to get the women stoked about kiteboarding and come away with having learned something new and fun! From the feedback we have received so far, it seems we accomplished our goal!

ExotiKite Kiteboarding provided the instructors, gear and location.  Thank you to all that volunteered their time!

We are excited to announce our first event at the KB4Girls Baja Chapter! We would like to invite any woman interested in kiteboarding in Baja to our FREE clinic, Saturday February 4th.

We have put together a group of 3 female instructors to teach any woman who wants to learn, beginner to advanced.  We have Airrush team rider, Lisa Tedford, who will be teaching those ladies who want to come out and give kiteboarding a try with land lessons.  Kirstin Ulmer, Cabrinha rider and Lord of the Wind Big Air 1st place winner, will be teaching jumping. Megan O'Leary, will be teaching free style, transitions and overall kiteboarding level improvement.

This event is FREE to all ladies who want to come out and participate.  The clinics will begin promptly at 2:30pm, so please show up a few minutes early so we can set you up with your instructor.  All lessons will be held at the ExotiKite Kiteboarding School in Los Barriles

After the lessons we will have a cocktails and a Q&A session.

I am so happy to welcome woman kiteboarders or any woman interested in kiteboarding to the Baja Sur Chapter of KB4Girls.

I am a kiteschool and kitestore owner, a mom, and kiteboarder!  I was thrilled when Laurel invited us to create a chapter here in Los Barriles.  Since I learned to kiteboard 8 years ago, I have been passionate about encouraging woman to try kiteboarding.  I believe that learning to kiteboard takes courage, intuitiveness, and perseverance.  These qualities are some that all women have innately, which is why kiteboarding is such an incredible sport for women of all ages!

If you are a woman traveling to Baja Sur or living here I welcome you to come to anyone of our KB4Girls upcoming events.  Calendar to be posted promptly.  Each event will take place at the ExotiKite Kiteboarding School in Los Barriles.
