Gokova Bay, Turkey Chapter Event: Mothers and Daughters Introduction to Powerkiting
EVENT POSTPONED UNTIL SEPTEMBER 2012

Spring is upon us here in Charleston and last year our local kite gals put together their favorite tips for feeling beautiful while fighting wind, sun, salt, and sand! We thought girls globally might find our tips helpful.
Below we've listed ten of our most popular beauty suggestions..... :) Happy Kiting!
1. When you are thinking about protecting yourself from the sun, it is essential that you protect your beautiful locks as well. Sun damage can lead to faded color, brittle texture, and split ends. Douse your hair in your favorite conditioner before you hit the water. For maximum protection try something with SPF, like Redken UV Daily Sun Milk or Phytoplage Protective Beach Spray. When you get off the water you'll have a fighting chance at silky smooth hair instead of sticky straw.
2. Use a high powered sunscreen that won't budge, don't forget those tiny places like your ears, lips, and the back of your neck. If you DO get burned rub down with apple cider vinegar, then keep the skin moistened with lots of aloe vera. This awesome combination will prevent blistering and peeling. Nothing says sexy like shedding lizard skin!
3. If you're wearing a seat harness we highly suggested to use long board shorts or chance suffering a horrid inner thigh rash. Also make sure your board shorts are free of any sand before you saddle in.
4. If you want to sport a bikini, use a waist harness, but make sure your bottoms fit tight. String bikinis are often the best for a secure fit; but be sure to use a double knot system! Also, unless you have skin of steel always wear a rash guard or chance your hips looking like someone rubbed you down with sandpaper.
5. Mascara. You have three options. #1: Clear mascara still highlights your lash if you've got to look your best for a biz meeting but plan to hit the water after. #2: If you must wear mascara go with something water proof but be sure to have some lotion in your beach bag to remove any that didn't stay put after your session or sport the drugged-out look it's back in style. #3: If you have light lashes ask your local beauty experts about dying your lashes. Nothing to clean away and nothing to apply...oh my!
6. Feet. After a full day of walking up wind or just getting caught crossing what feels like burning hot coal, a.k.a sand in the summer, your tootsies will be well toasted. Rub down the bottoms of your feet with a heavy moisturizer for dry skin like Elemental Herbs All good Goop. Next apply a pair of socks for at least 20 minutes or for best results overnight, wake up with beautiful soft hydrated feet again. Ahhhh!
7. Find yourself frequently going out for drinks with fellow kite friends after a session to share stories? Be sure to have a spare set of clean digs in your car along with lotion for your dried out salty dog face. Alba Jasmine & Vitamin E Moisture Cream is super hydrating and smells lovely too! If you really want to show you're on your A game, keep a solar shower (or even just a gallon jug of water) in your trunk and use it to take a quick splash...presto you're ready for a beer and a burger.
8. Eye protection: reduce the number of crow's feet marching across your face and...oh yeah, hold on to your vision as long as possible by wearing sunglasses! Check out Bomber Sunglasses or Surf Shades, these both have a great systems to keep you from losing your glasses when you hit the water.
9. Holding on to a kite bar for hours can give you man hands fast, calluses everywhere! Cut down on these by either being diligent about using a heavy moisturizer before and after your session OR pick up a pair of Dakine fingerless gloves and ride the day away.
10. Just did your nails? Well girl, you're out of luck, just remember, if you want to be a kiter you have to get your priorities straight. If you want your nails to stay looking clean go for the short natural style and the sand will easily escape, leaving you looking twice as nice.
As the chapter ambassador for the KB4girls Yucatan I would like to tell you a little bit about myself.
First of all i’m really excited to meet more women out there who are interested in kiteboarding and wanting to share this experience. Women have a different way of learning and we need feedback in order to grow. I am a strong believer in positive encouragement and patience. The Kite Beach Yucatan KB4girls camps will exercise my personal principals as well as the successful techniques of Kristen Boese.
Kite Beach Yucatan is a kite school and travel business I started in 2011. We have a beach front villa right on the best part of the Yucatan coast. The water is shallow, warm and clean. We are extremely fortunate to be the first kite school in the Yucatan so kiting areas are empty! This makes it a premier destination to improve your skills.
Personally i’m sponsored by Epic kites, Gopro, Jet Pilot, Heated Wetsuits, Heart & Huntington, True Beauty, Fuel Clothing & Steelmx. In February 2012 I appeared on the cover of Edge magazine (http://www.edge4chicks.com/main/edge-magazine-issue-1/) with a 4 page article written about me. The first edition of Kite Girl magazine displayed an small article about me and the Most Influential Girl Kitesurfer (MIGK) competition I created in 2010. The second edition of Kite Girl magazine’s cover girl was the winner of MIGK competition and I wrote a 2 page article about the top 9 nominations.
I’ve been kiting since 2008 but had 2 years off between then and now. I’ve traveled around all South America, Central America, South East Asia, Europe and North America.
In April of 2012 I will be competing in the PKRA racing series here in Mexico as well as the freestyle exhibition with the boys. In May I will be doing a downwind race and freestyle competition in Buseries. Wish me luck!!
Nothing says…sexy baby…like tan faces, hands, and feet while the rest of the body remains white….but do we care? NO, because we love kiting!
The Charleston March 11th KB4girls meeting developed into a weekend affair of blasting NE winds. Saturday March 10th a couple of gals rallied for an adventurous downy from Isle of Palms to Sullivan’s Island. The forecast predicted winds dying back as the afternoon marched on, so we took a vote and decided to rig bigger, HA, Mother Nature had her own plans and winds only increased as the day went on.
One of us rode a surfboard strapless, and the other a twintip. Needless to say the strapless session turned into an exhausting, completely over powered event. It felt like trying to paraglide and sumo wrestle at the same time! My twintip buddy wrestled with the large choppy waves and got busted rocking out several spectacular hovering helicopters that left us both giggling. After 3 hours of powered carnage and several social encounters with other downy crews, we decided to call it a day.
Sunday morning - we woke up to more of the same, blasting NE winds…yeah! The group officially met at 11am to partake in the fun. Due to daylight savings time and a full day of wind the day before, we outnumbered the boys for the first part of the day. A few gals arrived only to leave empty handed after realizing a much smaller kite was needed to ride, or they’d be hitching a ride back from China.
As the session progressed, we attempted to grab some video footage with a waterproof Olympus camera, but upon review - we’re going to be honest and tell you – the quality was mediocre. What could we expect: hanging out on a sandbar filming with one hand, holding a kite in place with the other, and shaky hands fighting the cold NE winds. Despite our video skills, we focused hard on form and technique and saw major improvements by the end. Our two hour session ended with minor displays of public disrobement exposing our wetsuit tans as we threw on dry clothes and headed to the taco joint.
For April, we are hopeful that we’ll get a chance to even out those tan lines as we say goodbye to old man winter and welcome spring! Warning: mediocre video footage in the works…stay tuned. J LOL.

All KB4Girls events are free to join however, due to the devastating earthquake which hit the Van area of Turkey in October 2011, the Gokova Bay Chapter will be collecting for the victims of the earthquake.
If you come and join one of our events we would be extremely grateful for a donation, of your choice, towards this cause.

As you know, in June (15-17 Inclusive) Kristin is coming back to El Gouna to hold a Global KB4Girls Advanced clinic here at Buzzha Beach with our hosts, Kiteboarding Club. Registration is already open and some girls have already registered.
With fantastic support from El Gouna and the hotels here, we have been able to secure a great rate for rooms in 5 of the “Marina Hotels”: Fanadir, Mosaique, Captain’s Inn, Turtle’s Inn and the Ali Pasha. The rates (see below) are available for Bed and Breakfast (B&B) or for Half Board (HB) and are valid for up to a 2 week stay as long as the 2 weeks includes the 15th, 16th and 17th!! Take advantage and come and enjoy all El Gouna has to offer and bring all your friends and family too, as the rate is open to everyone who quotes the promotional code… as long as there are still rooms available that is, it’s just too good to miss!! I think it may be a good idea to book your room as early as possible after registration. The clinic is a great reason to get a real party vibe going and get as many people as possible to come and enjoy El Gouna, so these hotels may get booked up pretty quickly!! :D :D :D
Here’s a link to the hotels website, so you can see the accommodation details, they are under the drop down menus for the 4 star and 3 star hotels. http://hotels.elgouna.com/default.aspx
Use the interactive map and zoom to locate them. The 2 closest to Buzzha Beach and Kiteboarding Club (where the clinic will take place) are Fanadir and Mosaique, which are next door to each other on the North Basin. The other hotels are located quite close to each other round Abu Tig Marina. All the hotels are within walking distance of each other or you can easily get around by tok tok (5 LE per person per journey) or taxi (15 LE anywhere in El Gouna) and there’s a shuttle bus service around El Gouna that costs 20 LE for a weekly ticket.
Fanadir & Mosaique:
Single B&B 28€ HB 43€
Double B&B 37€ HB 67€
Ali Pasha, Captain’s Inn & Turtle’s Inn:

Welcome to the Lancing, UK Chapter! We (Andrina and Jo) are extremely excited about launching this chapter, and are already planning loads of exciting events for this year!
Lancing is one of THE BEST places to kite on the South Coast. It has something for everyone! Learning to kite is easy with the consistent summer winds and low flat water sessions. And more advanced riders can push their skills on flat water or take advantage of small swells that occasionally push in. To top it off we have a fantastic group of local kiters who never hesitate to help out or offer advice when asked.
Lancing has been host to two KB4Girls clinics so far, and at the last event we ran the first ‘friendly competition’ in association with our National governing body the BKSA. These last two clinics were thoroughly enjoyed by all participants (even the first clinic where there was no wind!)
Read all about the 2011 clinic (and fun competition!) here!
And click here for the KB4girls Lancing Video's 2010 and 2011
We will be organising events every second sunday of the month from April to October. These will range from non-wind activities (e.g. riding the local Cable at Hove Lagoon, SUPPING, kite video sessions and simulator training etc) to kite clinics, downwinders, video/photo technique kite sessions and open days to encourage beginners. We will be organising a trip to Egypt to take part at the KB4 girls event there this year, and will be doing our annual trip to the West Country, read about our last one here:
We will post details of upcoming events on this page and the KB4girls Facebook page. We are also always available in between chapter events if you want to kite or do something else, just get in touch (see below) with either one of us. We look forward to meeting you soon!
I have been kiteboarding now for 8 years, I did my IKO instrutor training in 2009 in Weymouth and am now a Level 2 IKO instructor, and I plan on doing the BKSA training this year. I currently teach through the Brighton Kite Surf Academy, which is based on Lancing beach, which is also my local beach and where i live( I can see the kite beach from my lounge.) I am also a KB4 girls UK ambassador. I have been fortunate enough to attend and coach at various KB4 girls clinics in Egypt, Turkey, New York and of course England. I am also now sponsored by BEST Kiteboarding. I am super excited about creating this KB4 girls Chapter with Jo. We met at the early days of our kiteing journey, and take great inspiration from each other. We are both super excited with how the female kite scene has developed and are looking forward to helping its growth continue.
Jo Malyon:
I started kiting in 2003, after becoming bored of watching and videoing my partner all the time! I inevitably got the 'kite bug' and my passion and interest in kiting has (like most people) continued to increase year after year. Now sponsered by Airush and Shinn I continue to enjoy riding in one of the best spots on the South Coast of England, my local beach -Lancing.I have been active on the girls kite scene for some time organising social events and getting girls together for kite sessions, and have been involved in organising local KB4 girls events the last few years and am very excited about starting this chapter together with Andrina. Nothing motivates my kiting more than kiting with other girls! I plan on doing my BKSA instructor training this year, and am looking forward to 2012 -the year of the girls ;)
If you want to find out more or have any questions - please email us!

I am very happy to welcome all you kiting ladies to the Gokova Bay, Turkey, KB4Girls Chapter.
After following Kristin and Laurel’s careers, over the years, I am extremely happy to have been asked to be the Chapter Ambassador for Gokova Bay in Turkey.
Kristin visited us in May 2011 for a KB4Girls UNITE Event that was fantastic! See the KB4Girls Press Release here.
I started kiting in 2003 and over the years kiteboarding has gone from a hobby sport to my day to day life. I am not a pro-rider however I am co-founder of AlwaysWindy.com which means my life revolves around Kiteboarding.
I am addicted to Kiteboarding and want other women and girls to come and experience this incredible sport which has united so many of us over the years.
If Turkey has never been on your kiting radar, think again! Gokova Bay is an incredible spot for all levels of kiters, from Beginner to Advanced. With its warm, shallow waters and constant daily thermal winds, you can’t go wrong with a trip to the Bay but be prepared, you will kite every day as the thermal winds are like clockwork!
I am based in Gokova Bay for 8 months of the year, so come and find me at the Bay where I will be more than happy to give those of you who are already riding some free coaching for a small donation to our local charity.
If you would like any information about coming to Gokova Bay or the KB4Girls Chapter events, please feel free to email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
